BHumServ Series of Orientation

T hese past three weeks of orientation have been eye-opening for me as a new Human Services student. Each session brought valuable insights that helped me understand the journey I'm embarking on. In our first session with Ma'am Jen and Ma'am Caren, I learned about how our program evolved from being Bachelor of Arts in Guidance Counseling to what is now known as Bachelor in Human Services. It was fascinating to discover the program's history and understand the competencies we'll develop. This session made me realize that I'm part of something bigger a field that's constantly growing and adapting to better serve people's needs. The second week with Ma'am Jover gave me a clearer picture of what lies ahead in my academic journey. Learning about our curriculum and program requirements helped ease some of my anxieties about college. It's like being given a map for a long journey while the path might be challenging, at least I know what ...

Three Weeks In

Today marks the end of my third week in college, and things are slowly sinking in. Being in college is really different from high school, and I'm still in the process of adjusting, but I know things will get easier for me soon. Right now, I'm still getting to know my classmates and socializing with them. I'm careful about managing my energy, making sure to protect myself from being drained while still being genuine in my interactions.      Being a Helicon (a Human Services student) so far feels right for me. After being introduced to my subjects, especially my majors, I felt relieved because I can tell that I'm going to love this journey. I'm excited to learn more and gain deeper knowledge about helping others. The classes are interesting, and even though some topics are challenging, they make me more curious about what's ahead.      So far, I'm enjoying my college experience and learning to maintain balance in my life. I'm trying not to...

HSB101 Beginnings

First Steps into Mental Health and Human Services As I begin my journey in the Human Services program, I knew we would explore human behavior and psychology, but my introduction to HSB101 (Mental Health and Human Services) exceeded my expectations and sparked genuine excitement. The subject promises to offer deep insights into understanding people's minds and behaviors, which directly aligns with my passion for helping others.      D uring our first class meeting, I was immediately drawn to the comprehensive overview of topics we'll be covering. However, before we even met in person, Ma'am Jen had already organized our Google Classroom and posted several modules. I'll admit – seeing all the materials at once felt a bit overwhelming. This moment actually served as my first real "wake-up call" to college life, making me realize I was no longer in high school and needed to adjust to a new level of academic responsibility.    Despite the initial ...

Why I Chose to Pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services?

My journey toward choosing Human Services began during my senior high school years at Mandurriao National High School, where I specialized in Humanities and Social Sciences. This experience played a crucial role in my personal growth and self-improvement, helping me develop strong leadership skills while embodying the core values of patience, compassion, and kindness. S enior year was particularly challenging as I faced the pressure of making important decisions about my college education. This transitional period required careful consideration of my future path, and I found myself consistently drawn to helping professions. My initial plan was to pursue BA Psychology, but I faced financial and institutional limitations. While both the University of Iloilo (UI) and University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) offered the program, neither was an ideal choice for me— UI wasn't my preferred institution, and UPV's location was too far from the city.      While l...

Who's Angel Kate Baron Behind the Curtains?

From my friends' perspective, they would likely describe me as a cute and funny girl who's always talking about her passions. I'm not afraid to share my opinions about things— what I like and don't like. I know where I stand, and I'm also kind and caring. Similarly, my family would definitely describe me as talkative. As the youngest, I'm always talking and asking about things I'm curious about, and they would describe me as a sweet and kind girl.      But what about others' insights? For those who don't know me well enough, who is Angel Kate Baron behind the curtains?      As you've noticed, the common thread in how both my family and friends see me is that I'm talkative, and that's true. I'm a girl who loves to discuss deeper topics. I have a thirst for knowledge, especially for gaining a deeper understanding of things I'm curious about. Talking to people is like therapy for me - it's my way of expressing what's ins...
