HSP 103 | Module 3: Lessons 3 Laboratory – Humanistic and Mindfulness Approach Simulation
Learning Artifact
Critical Reflection
During the simulation, I experienced both client and counselor roles. When I acted as the counselor, I focused on maintaining a calm presence, listening carefully, and responding with empathy instead of immediately trying to solve the problem. I learned that in humanistic helping, the goal is not to fix the client’s situation but to support them in expressing their thoughts and emotions safely.
One important skill we practiced was mindful breath awareness and co-regulation. This activity showed me how helping a client slow their breathing can reduce emotional overwhelm and create a sense of calm. I also learned that paying attention to small cues such as tone of voice, body posture, and pauses can help a counselor respond more appropriately to the client’s emotional state.
Overall, the simulation helped me understand that effective helping requires patience, empathy, and strong listening skills. It also showed me how mindfulness techniques can support emotional regulation and create a more supportive counseling environment.
Connection to Professional Practice
As a future human services professional, I will need to practice active listening, emotional awareness, and non-judgmental responses when working with individuals facing personal challenges. These skills are important for developing strong helping relationships and supporting clients in their own process of understanding and growth.
