HSP 103 | Module 3 Lesson 4 Laboratory – Cognitive Behavioral Theoretical Approach to Helping

Learning Artifact

This image represents my participation in the Module 3 laboratory activity on the Cognitive-Behavioral theoretical approach, where we practiced identifying how thoughts influence emotions and behaviors in helping situations.

Critical Reflection

This laboratory activity helped me understand the Cognitive Behavioral approach in a more practical way. I learned that people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are closely connected, and that negative thinking patterns can influence how someone reacts to situations. Through the activity, I became more aware of how identifying and questioning these thoughts can help a person develop healthier perspectives and coping strategies.

The session also showed me how important it is for a helper to guide clients in examining their own beliefs instead of immediately offering solutions. Asking questions such as looking for evidence behind certain thoughts can help clients reflect more deeply on their experiences. This made me realize that effective helping involves patience and critical thinking, as well as creating a supportive environment where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts.
Connection to Professional Practice
As a future human services professional, learning the Cognitive Behavioral approach will help me support clients in recognizing how their thinking patterns affect their emotions and actions. This perspective can guide clients toward more constructive ways of understanding and responding to challenges.

Personal Reflection
This activity reminded me that even small shifts in thinking can influence how people handle their problems, and that guiding someone to reflect on their thoughts can be a powerful step in the helping process.
