Critical Reflection

Module 1 helped me realize that human services are not just about helping individuals, but about understanding the systems around them. Before this module, I mostly thought of helping as direct support to a person. Now, I understand that factors such as family, education, health services, and community resources all work together and influence a person’s situation. Learning about how these systems function, especially in the Philippine context, made me more aware of how access, coordination, and available resources affect the help people receive.

This module also helped me see my growth from HSB 101 to HSP 103. In my first year, I focused more on mental health at an individual level. Now, I see mental health and human services in a broader way, recognizing how environment and systems shape people’s experiences. Reflecting on this made me more aware of my own community and the gaps that exist, and it reminded me that effective helping requires understanding the bigger picture, not just the individual concern.

Connection to Professional Practice

As a future human services professional, this module taught me the importance of systems thinking. I now understand that effective helping requires looking beyond the individual and considering the larger systems affecting their situation. This perspective will guide me in assessing client needs more holistically and advocating for coordinated support within the community.

Personal Reflection

This module made me curious about how human services professionals manage cases when systems fail to connect properly. I hope to learn more about how coordination can be improved in real practice settings.

Learning Artifact This photo represents our counseling roleplay where we applied different human services lenses in responding to the client. Critical Reflection In this activity, I took on the role of a counselor and applied appropriate helping skills in responding to the client, Jared, who was experiencing work-related stress. This allowed me to practice how to start a session, ask questions, and respond in a supportive and professional manner. I learned the importance of building rapport, actively listening, and using empathy throughout the session. Applying the lenses helped guide my responses, especially in understanding the client’s emotions, environment, and needs. HSP 103 | Module 2: Systems & Multicausality

It reflects how different factors and perspectives are interconnected, which was a key concept in Module 2 and was practiced through the simulation activity and the Wadhwani Interpersonal Skills course. Reflection Module 2 helped me understand that problems in human services rarely have only one cause. Through systems and multicausality, I learned that issues such as mental health struggles, family conflict, or school difficulties are influenced by multiple factors that interact with each other. This perspective made me realize that helping someone means looking beyond surface-level problems and understanding the broader context of their situation.
