HSP 103 | Module 1: Simulation Laboratory Activity – Facilitator Reflection (Scenario 1)

Learning Artifact

This image captures my role as a facilitator during Scenario 1 of the Simulation Laboratory. I observed group dynamics, managed time, and guided reflection without directly influencing the group’s decisions.

Critical Reflection
Serving as the facilitator for Scenario 1 was a meaningful and challenging experience. Unlike being a participant, my role required me to step back and allow the group to struggle, think, and learn on their own. I had to resist the urge to give answers and instead focus on observing and asking thoughtful questions.

One of the most challenging parts was maintaining neutrality, especially when the group seemed unsure or stuck. However, I learned that struggle is part of the learning process. By asking probing questions rather than giving solutions, I saw the group gradually develop clearer reasoning and stronger collaboration.

Facilitating also made me more aware of group dynamics, who spoke the most, who needed encouragement, and how decisions were made collectively. It showed me how important psychological safety is in learning environments, especially when dealing with complex and sensitive human services issues.

Connection to Professional Practice
This experience helped me develop facilitation skills that are essential in human services settings, such as case conferences, community meetings, and group interventions. As a future human services professional, knowing how to guide discussions, manage time, and encourage reflection without dominating the process will be very valuable.

Personal Reflection
Being a facilitator helped me build confidence in my leadership and communication skills. It reminded me that effective leadership does not always mean speaking the most, but knowing when to listen, observe, and ask the right questions.
